Attorney Tara Lynn Witt
Practicing Since 2007

Ms. Witt graduated Summa cum Laude from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois with a double major in instrumental music performance and political science. She then attended the UNH Franklin Pierce Law School in Concord, New Hampshire, intending to someday practice entertainment and copyright law, which would combine her interest in music and the law. However, while at law school, Ms. Witt took a course in criminal law and participated in a work-study job in the school's criminal clinic where she became intrigued by litigation practice.
After graduation in 2007, Ms. Witt was hired by the New Hampshire Public Defender’s Office. Through that work, Attorney Witt found her voice and a passion to seek justice on behalf of indigent clients who needed someone to stand beside them in the fight against the vastly greater resources of the prosecution. It quickly became clear that telling the truth about her client’s lives and circumstances while mounting a vigorous defense was a true calling. Tara spent 13 years litigating thousands of serious felony cases while maintaining a steady caseload of misdemeanor cases and serving as a trusted mentor to new lawyers. She also served as a member of NHPD’s litigation support team with a focus on competency and mental health issues, and as a team member on the Rockingham County Veteran’s Court.
In July of 2020, Attorney Witt moved from New Hampshire to Texas when she joined the Office of Capital and Forensic Writs, a state government office representing clients in post-conviction following a death sentence or those convicted using faulty forensic evidence. Post-conviction practice requires attorneys to review vast amounts of written materials about the case, what happened at trial, and the client’s history. That information is then consolidated into a compelling narrative presented in both written and oral forms to the trial court to support granting relief to the client.
Attorney Witt built a solid foundation upon which to start her own law practice through her prior work at NHPD and OCFW. She is known to be a dedicated advocate, knowledgeable about the applicable law, exceptionally organized and detail-focused, and well-prepared to meet any challenge in or out of court.
During her time away from the office, Attorney Witt still plays bass clarinet and piano a bit. She also belongs to multiple reading and creative writing clubs, and can often be found dancing with the sincere hope that no one is watching.
